Military science fiction is a work combining elements of both military fiction and science fiction. It oftentimes overlaps with military fantasy (e.g. Warhammer 40k). At its most basic, it is science fiction that focuses on military.
The protagonist in the work of military science fiction is almost always a member of military, and usually a part of the chain of command. The story is usually, but not always, set against a background of a large-scale space war. Military structure itself is usually based on the modern militaries, with futuristic elements being primarily centered on technology and the setting.
