Source: T’gram: Our Wars Today: According to the United States CENTCOM, an #IRGC support vessel (Shahid Baziar) attempted to seize a US #Navy Saildrone Explorer unmanned surface vessel that was “operating in international waters of the #Arabian Gulf [#Persian Gulf]” and tow it back to #Iran. The Shahid Baziar was intercepted by the #American patrol coastal ship USS Thunderbolt (PC 12) and eventually released its tow. Via atlas.news3 on Instagram. Sail drones are designed to autonomously collect atmospheric and oceanographic data, conduct bathymetry surveys for navigational purposes, as well as carry out monitoring operations. The US Navy’s 5th Fleet began testing the platform in the region earlier this year, which is likely for ISR and mapping purposes.

The United States Navy has released the following footage showing the IRGC Support Ship, Shahid Baziar illegally towing and attempting to detain the Saildrone Explorer unmanned surface vessel in international waters of the Arabian Gulf today.In response, the U.S. Navy patrol coastal ship USS Thunderbolt (PC 12) was dispatched as well as an MH-60S which chased away the Iranian vessel after it detached its tow-cable.
